The Tartana, an imposing single mast sailing boat, was a vital part of the history of navigation in the Mediterranean Sea. A stay in the Tartana suite of the Yacht Club Capo Cervo of Sorrento is like taking part in this history itself, with all its adventurous complexity.
During the 18th Century the boat was used by the Sorrentine sailors to transport pozzuolana, a hydraulic cement discovered by the Romans, from the northern shores of the Bay of Naples to Sorrento.
One of the illuminated walls of the Suite houses a precious model of the Tartana of Sorrento, built by skilled local artisans. An antique wooden trunk, once belonging to Gioacchino Lauro, the father of the famous shipowner Achille Lauro, sits at the foot of the bed. As was the custom in those days, the inside of the trunk is decorated with a painting of the sailing vessel on which Lauro was embarked and, in the top corners, as if guiding stars in the sky, are paintings of his wife and mother.
The modern comforts of the Tartana suite combine perfectly with the elegance and individuality of the paintings and the historical maps which decorate the walls.
The Tartana suite is a double room which has a communicating door with the Pianosa Suite. The two suites together form an excellent solution for exclusive family accommodation.
